Home & pets / THE BUYING BRIEF
A pet-hair vacuum for the home behind the headline.
Flooring, furniture, stairs and maintenance make a better brief than pet on the box.

Pet hair is a buying reason, not a complete specification. A home with stairs and upholstered furniture presents different requirements from a small apartment with mostly hard floors. Before comparing suction headlines, identify where the hair accumulates and which part of cleaning is most frustrating.
We have not tested these formats or rated their pickup performance. This guide builds a household brief around floor suitability, attachments, handling and maintenance. Manufacturer guidance can explain the design and intended use; it cannot by itself establish that one model cleans better than every competitor.
01
Map the surfaces you need to clean
List hard floors, rugs, fitted carpet, stairs and upholstery separately. Check floor-manufacturer instructions when comparing cleaning equipment, then verify the vacuum's documented suitability and supplied heads. A main floor head may not address the furniture that creates your biggest problem.
Dyson's buying guide discusses floor types, vacuum formats and attachments. We use that as manufacturer background, not as independent evidence of pickup quality. For an actual shortlist, ask for exact-model information about the surfaces and tasks you need rather than extending a broad maker claim to every household.
02
Choose the form you want to handle
A cordless stick, upright or canister changes how you carry, store and use the equipment. Think through one ordinary cleaning session, including stairs, narrow spaces and reaching the sofa. Compare documented weight and dimensions, but recognize that how the weight is distributed is something you may need to assess yourself.
For cordless models, inspect runtime conditions and charging arrangements rather than assuming the largest advertised duration applies to your usual settings. For corded formats, compare reach, cord storage and outlet access. Our buying judgment is to match the format to the cleaning route through your home before comparing optional features.
03
Check the actual box contents
Write the attachment you need beside each task: floors, furniture, crevices or other permitted surfaces. Then compare that list with the contents of the exact package. A product-family photograph can show accessories sold separately, and similarly named variants may come with different tool sets.
Treat anti-tangle, filtration and pickup claims as separate claims requiring exact-model evidence. A pet badge does not prove any of them. Read the instructions and documented limitations, and avoid inferring a health outcome from filter terminology. This guide does not recommend equipment as treatment for allergies or other conditions.
04
Include the part after the cleaning
Review the emptying method, brush access, approved cleaning routine and any replacement consumables. If an item needs periodic replacement, check the actual part number and availability from appropriate sellers. Do not substitute a visually similar filter or battery without documented compatibility.
Compare the delivered package and ownership needs with the return policy. Consider where the vacuum and charging equipment will live when not in use. A useful purchase fits both the cleaning task and the space you have for it; an impressive specification cannot compensate for accessories or maintenance you did not plan.
THE SHORTLIST STARTS HERE
Three directions to compare
Start with the approach that fits your needs, then compare the details that matter to you.
Quick-clean cordless
A documented suitable floor head and a charging routine that fit frequent cleanups.
The trade-off: Headline runtime may use different conditions from your normal cleaning.
Whole-home format
Compare handling, reach and storage around your complete cleaning route.
The trade-off: Floor suitability and weight need checking for the exact model.
Furniture-focused package
Prioritize the supplied upholstery tool and the instructions for your fabric.
The trade-off: A main floor head alone may not cover the task that matters most.
